Mincraft Coding for Kids

Minecraft helping kids learning coding

Many kids would not notice how time flies as they engage in Minecraft, an immersive game which allows players to create their own mini-universe. Players can be contented with playing the game as it is but those who have a knack for coding can push the fun by building their own features into the game. This may seem like the greatest thrill of the game, but the other is that kids get to learn coding for their own pleasure.

LearnToMod is an add-on in the Minecraft game from where the modifications to the game are made. This modification has been the greatest success pillar of the game, and it helps kids to come up with their own mod. One such mod allows kids to build a teleporter machine that moves them between locations while another creates crude weapons from scratch which a player can use to access different places.

Reports from parents and teachers indicate that kids are now spending more time on their computers developing code that changes the various aspects of the world they are playing in. Microsoft is the company that created the Minecraft game but the idea to incorporate the coding for kids component came from ThoughtSTEM, and so far, it has been quite impactful. Before teaming up with Microsoft, ThoughtSTEM began as a service that offered coding lessons to individuals in Oakhurst, Granite Bay, and San Diego in California.

The idea of LearnToMod now is to hook students on the diverse ways in which they can use coded so that they would be motivated to study programming. As they advance within the game, players also advance their knowledge of coding so that every time they are playing, they are thinking of how best to improve their experience. These benefits plus the fact that students earned university credits for their coding prowess even though they never stepped into a coding class, is one of the strategies for drawing in more coders.

The popularity of Minecraft as an educational tool, as opposed to pure gaming experience, is bound to change the gaming scene. Parents and teachers are by far likely to choose or buy this game for their kids because of the benefits it has on their intellectual development. There is limit as to what this game can be used to teach; from microbiology to history, every subject that is taught in school can be adapted in the game. This has been made possible because of the open-minded nature of the Minecraft game.
