Computer Coding For Kids vs. Coding with a Toy/Robot

In an increasingly digital world, the value of teaching your kids to code is absolute. Much like learning a language, coding is easier discovered at a tender age. Also, learning coding prepares your child for a potentially lucrative and in-demand career in STEM. After all, there’s a high demand for skilled computer programmers across the board. With that in mind, there are two ways most students learn coding: (1) computer coding for kids and (2) coding with the help of robots or programmable toys. Right from the outset, I have to confess that I find computer coding programs for kids more robust and more efficient than coding with a robot. And here’s why.

First Things First – How Is Computer Coding For Kids Different From Programming Robots?

Sure, toys or robots can help your little one learn the fundamentals of coding. With a few clicks, the kid can program the toy to move, dance and whatnot. It all sounds great, but how will the child learn what makes the toy tick? While most toys or robots were designed to help kids at a very early stage, computer coding kicks it up a notch. It’s ideal for kids who have learned how to read and write code. This way, they can learn how to write “under-the-hood” codes. You see, when a child hits the big 7, he or she can use simple visual coding languages like Scratch. They can still couple this with advanced coding robots. However, when they reach middle school, they can get their feet wet with computer coding for kids. With computer coding programs for kids like Arduino, children can actually build their own devices or robots. They can even handle rudimentary elements of coding languages like C or Python. In a way, they have graduated from coding with toys or robots.

The Benefits of Computer Coding for Kids
Computer coding for kids boasts numerous advantages over coding with a robot.
(1) Get “Real” Coding Feel
With computer coding for kids, the children can make a splash into the world of computer science. They can get the feel of programming languages that’ll prove indispensable in their careers in STEM.
(2) Boosts Critical Thinking
Computer coding for kids encourages sequential critical thinking. Unlike robots, computer codes call for attention to detail and solving of a slew of programming problems.
No matter how you look at it, computer coding for kids can do wonders for budding programmers.
